If you close your eyes, you can envision the perfect trail. What does it look like? More than likely, it would be a seemingly never-ending ribbon of singletrack winding through the backcountry under a canopy of a mature forest. Or maybe your dream trail is in the high desert where you see yourself meandering through sage, cactus, and pinon pines one moment and then screaming down slickrock the next. The trail would have the flow of a bobsled run with lots of perfectly banked turns and fast straight-aways. You’d also find a few rocky technical sections and maybe even a little log jump or two to test your skills. Of course, what perfect trail would be complete without a couple of gut-wrenching climbs thrown in there just to let you know that you’re still alive and able to breathe.
In your dream, the bike you are riding is just as fun as the trail itself. It’s confidence-inspiring as you bomb through the technical sections of trail you never thought you could clear. You attack the corners with stability and speed. The handling is predictable and precise. When the trail starting pointing uphill, you gear down and expect to lose a little climbing efficiency with the dreaded pedal-induced bobbing that plagues nearly all full-suspension bikes. As you head up the hill, you feel powerful. There’s no bobbing.
Where is it? It’s gotta be here. You hammer up the hill harder, determined to find the bob somewhere. It never appears. You’re mystified…you double check to make sure you aren’t really riding a hardtail and you continue to power up the rest of the climb.
